Ericsson announces the R290 satellite phone
Tuesday, June 22, 1999
Ericsson today announced dual mode satellite/GSM 900 mobile phone for global usage, which is specially designed for the Globalstar network and will enable users to make calls virtually anywhere in the world. Ericsson expects to launch the R290 series in limited quantities at the end of 1999 and in volume in the beginning of 2000.
The R290 is the most compact satellite phone to be announced, weighing only 350g. This dual mode phone also has a built-in modem for data and fax communication at 9.6 kbps in GSM mode and is prepared for 7.2 kbps in satellite mode.
The R290 provides comprehensive coverage in both GSM and satellite mode wherever Globalstar offers its services. Where there is no cellular coverage, limited roaming or capacity limitations, the phone can switch to satellite mode ensuring connectivity.
Similar to GSM roaming, the R290 requires only one subscription for both cellular and satellite usage. Users need just one mobile phone, one mobile phone number and will, depending on the service provider, have the possibility to receive one bill to cover both satellite and cellular calls.
The phone can be set to operate in four modes: satellite only, satellite preferred, GSM only and GSM preferred. Users can select the most appropriate setting for their needs.
The R290 is targeted at users for whom it is essential to stay in touch. For example, those who work and travel in areas that do not have cellular coverage. The majority of users are likely to be people who to a large extent work and travel within their national boarders or territory.
Ericsson expects that the first users of satellite phones will be professionals on the move. In addition, the compact size of the phone will attract many other users, for example those who participate in active leisure pastimes such as hiking, adventure travel or sailing.
Jan Ahrenbring, Vice President of Marketing and Communications, at Ericsson Mobile Communications says:
“This new phone ensures almost global connectivity combining the leading digital technology, GSM, with global satellite technology in one compact, robust, handset. The R290 extends mobile connectivity enabling people to communicate easily and effectively – when and with whom they wish. As users demand more from mobile technologies, we see satellite as the next logical step for anytime, anyplace communication.”
A range of useful accessories that will simplify and help usage in different situations complements the phone, specially developed for the R290:
- Advanced Car Kit
Including a handsfree option, so that it can work in both modes via a combined car-mounted satellite and GSM antenna
- Portable Handsfree
- Two types of Carrying Cases

Ericsson makes first call over the ACeS network using world’s smallest satellite/GSM phone
Thursday, March 23, 2000
– Ericsson announces the R190 satellite/GSM dual mode phone for Asian Cellular Satellite (ACeS) network
Ericsson today announced the R190, the world’s smallest and lightest satellite/GSM dual mode phone specially designed to work with the ACeS regional geostationary satellite, deployed over the Asia Pacific region.
Calls have been placed successfully across the network using the Ericsson R190. Equivalent to a standard GSM phone in design, size and weighing just over 200 grams, the Ericsson R190 phone represents a leap forward for satellite handsets. Ericsson expects to launch the R190 during the second half of 2000.
The Ericsson R190 is capable of operating in both satellite and GSM 900 modes. Once out of cellular range, the phone automatically switches to satellite mode to send or receive calls making it the ideal phone for users travelling to remote areas beyond cellular coverage.
“The development of a satellite handset of comparable size of a cellular phone represents a significant step forward for satellite communications and makes it more attractive for subscribers, “ said Jan Ahrenbring, Vice president, Marketing and Communications at Ericsson Mobile Communications. “With the dual mode Ericsson R190, subscribers in the Asia-Pacific region can benefit from extended mobile connectivity as a result of the complementary nature of satellite and GSM systems.”
The phone is targeted at users who require extended connectivity to be able to call wherever they are in the Asia-Pacific region. ACeS subscribers travelling outside satellite coverage will be able to roam GSM networks worldwide.
“We’re pleased to have Ericsson on board as supplier of phones for the ACeS network,” said Adi Adiwoso, CEO and President of AceS. “The launch of the ACeS services, combined with the announcement of the Ericsson R190 dual mode phone gives subscribers total coverage of Asia Pacific in addition to roaming capabilities on GSM networks around the world.”
The Ericsson R190’s small size is enabled by GMSS, which is derived from the popular GSM standard and exploits the filters, mixers and RF base band components already present in a GSM handset. Subscribers are able to roam on GSM networks and remain in communication should they move out of coverage area by switching to satellite mode.
The Ericsson R190 functions in four modes: GSM preferred – searches first for a GSM network and switches to satellite if one isn’t found, GSM only – searches only for a GSM network, satellite preferred – searches first for the satellite network and switches to GSM if it is not found, and satellite only – searches only for the satellite network. The phone is complemented by a range of useful accessories that will simplify and help usage in different situations.
Additional GSM antenna
The dual mode satellite/GSM antenna can be removed and replaced with a snap-on GSM antenna for use in GSM environments.
The included GSM antenna is lighter and smaller then the satellite/GSM antenna and enhances the phone’s compact profile.
